Die hohe Kunst des Radierspiels
In den USA ist das Zeichenbrett Etch A Sketch in jedem Kinderzimmer zu finden. Die Technik erinnert an ein Wachs-Radierung, wobei man das Kratzwerkzeug mittels zweier Drehrädchen in der Horizontalen und der Vertikalen bewegt. Wer jemals versucht hat, auf Etch-A-Sketch einen Kreis zu zeichnen weiß, dass die Erfolgskurve sehr, sehr flach ist.
Ein wahrer Meister ist ist der Etch-A-Sketchist alias Elliot Sharron. Auf der eigenen Website und auf Flickr zeigt er seine schönsten Werke, die er kurioserweise überwiegend vom Fernseher oder dem Computer-Bildschirm abzeichnet. Ganz ehrlich: Ich glaube, dass es sich bei den Abbildungen um Fotomontagen handelt.
Wer selbst mal eine Radierung anfertigen möchte, kann dies auch online versuchen (mit den Pfeiltasten der Computer-Tastatur). (Via tuaw.com)

Kann man auf der Zeichenfläche nicht auch direkt mit einer stumpfen Spitze Zeichnen?

Nein, das Gerät ist verkapselt und das Zeichnen funktioniert im Inneren, allein linear steuerbar über die Knöpfe … anders als bei diesen biegsamen Wachs-Tafeln. Der Zeichenstil auf den Fotos entspricht jedoch eher dem der Wachstafeln, und so glaube ich, dass dies ein Indiz für die »Fälschung« sein könnte.

Im Englisch jetzt:
My german’s rusty since high school but I think you might be dubious as to whether I really etch-a-sketch these things or use Photoshop. Each piece is 100% hand made on an Etch-a-sketch. Early on I would fiddle with the brightness and contrast a little to make them look better. But I now have a lighting set up that I’m satisfied with and they all go directly from my camera to flicker with only a little cropping around the edges.

Elliot, you’ve got it right: My first idea was Photoshop, because the illustrations seem to have grayscale color. But as you seem to be a real Etchasketch-wizzard … i believe you. Really!

The grey scale technique was explained in the Che Quevara post (the first time I discovered it by accident). To get a nice greytone you just have to pop the etch-a-sketch from below (don’t flip it, that’ll totally erase everything) and then go back over the partially erased piece to put in shadows and outlines. Kind of like graffiti writers who block out the space first and then go back over with highlights and outlines. There are lots of little techniques like that you can learn if you just practice.
